If you are a teacher and work with children, you know that they have this uncanny and innate ability to make you want to laugh and cry both at the same time. Sometimes, my 6th graders, 10th graders, and 11th graders have behaved in a way that is so nonsensical, hilarious and absurd that it brings tears to my eyes. I’m not necessarily mad, but annoyed and deeply amused at the same time.
In one of my classes last school year, I had a boy who loved to make RANDOM animal noises at RANDOM times in class. It was disruptive, and even though I told him to stop many times, he could not seem to help himself. But sometimes, when watching him, the other kids would start to smile, then laugh, then the whole class starts laughing, then I laugh, then I’m not even sure why we are all laughing. I laugh to the point that my stomach hurts and there are tears in my eyes.
So, in my personal experience, only kids have this ability to bring this effect out in me. My students will turn the classroom into a live action comedy sitcom show and I am there to witness it in person. This is what brings a tear or tears of joy to my eyes.
