Actually, Maria is my middle name. I was given this name because my father said he liked Latin names. In a past ESL center here in Shanghai, I was known as Teacher Maria for more than three years. When I changed to another center, I went back to using my first name. According to verywellfamily.com, “Maria can be translated to either mean “of the sea,” “bitter,” “beloved,” or “rebellious.” The last two meanings fit me. Hahahaha. To my understanding, I was given this name not based on its meaning though. This is my story.
